A common mistake when comparing national scholarships is assuming that a Scholar designation means guaranteed cash. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund selects thousands of HSF Scholars each year for mentoring, career guidance, leadership development, and events, but its website says only some may receive a payment. The Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF), by contrast, has a live 2027 application with a specific deadline for students graduating from high school.
HSF serves applicants of any race who identify as having Hispanic heritage. For 2026 it required U.S. citizenship, permanent legal residence, or DACA; a 3.0 minimum GPA for high-school students and 2.5 for college and graduate students; the 2026–27 FAFSA; and full-time enrollment at a U.S. public or nonprofit four-year university or graduate school. When awarded, HSF scholarships range from $500 to $5,000 based on relative need and available funding; Scholar status alone does not mean the student won that award. Some students may also voluntarily use Fund A Scholar, a direct-donation mechanism that still does not promise to cover the full gap. For tuition planning, wait for a formal amount notice and confirm with the college financial-aid office how the funds will be applied.
JRF targets spring 2027 high-school graduates who will start full-time college in fall, are U.S. citizens, and demonstrate need, academic achievement, leadership, and community service. The application asks for a transcript, ACT or SAT from one test date, recommendation, CSS Profile, and written responses. Applicants do not have to be athletes. The CSS report must be sent to JRF using code 4248, an administrative detail that can leave a file incomplete even when other materials are ready.
The JRF application is due January 14, 2027, at 5 p.m. EST. The foundation typically awards about 60 scholarships each year and distributes selected awards over four years while providing leadership support. HSF typically selects 10,000 Scholars, but not everyone receives money. The HSF Scholar Program may suit college and graduate students who meet its criteria; the Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship is more specific to students beginning a bachelor’s degree in 2027.
Before spending hours on essays, verify citizenship, academic level, institution, and each program’s calendar. JRF does not grant extensions and requires writing to reflect the student’s own voice; HSF directs applicants to its Help Center for document and selection rules. Use official forms and contact channels, and avoid paying intermediaries who promise to improve odds or guarantee a scholarship.
