From Tōbu-Nikkō Station, the road climbs through wooded valleys into Oku-Nikkō. Lake Chūzenji spreads below Mount Nantai, while Kegon Falls drops from the lake’s natural outlet; the two sights connect on foot from the Chūzenji Onsen stop. Buses make the outing possible without a car, but the scenery does not guarantee a quick timetable: Tōbu warns that October and November foliage traffic can add more than two hours and leave visitors without enough time to complete the route.
At the station, look for bay 2C for buses to Chūzenji Onsen and Oku-Nikkō; bay 2A continues towards Yumoto Onsen. Check the current Tōbu Bus timetable, since routes and stops vary by service and day. Chūzenji Onsen stop is about a five-minute walk from the Kegon viewpoint; the lake begins behind the cluster of shops and restaurants. A Tōbu pass may cover selected rail and bus sections, but not every pass covers the same area. Compare the included zone and number of trips before buying, especially if your return depends on the last bus.
At Kegon, the upper viewpoint shows the roughly 97-metre drop free of charge; an elevator descends about 100 metres to a lower platform closer to the roar and spray. The operator lists hours of 8:00–17:00 from March to November and 9:00–16:30 in winter; the round-trip elevator fare is ¥600 for adults and ¥400 for schoolchildren. The lake offers a different scale: shoreline paths, a seasonal sightseeing boat and views of Mount Nantai. Boat service runs from April to November, with routes and frequency changing by season and weather, so check before planning a lakeside walk around a sailing.
The practical choice is not to treat both stops as quick points on a rigid day trip. On a calm day, start at Kegon and then walk towards the lake or take a boat; in October and November, limit the plan to one area or stay overnight in Oku-Nikkō. Tōbu’s official notice even recommends considering the World Heritage Area pass for visitors making only a day trip to Nikkō, because traffic may prevent them from reaching Chūzenji. Check the final return bus, avoid tight connections and bring an extra layer: the lakeside altitude makes the air colder than at the station.
Profiles of the recommended places: Lake Chuzenji · Kegon Falls
Outside foliage season, combine the viewpoint with a lakeside walk; in October and November, allow a wide buffer or stay in Oku-Nikkō and check the last bus.
Options to compare
These options relate to the question. Read each profile and check current details before deciding.
At 1,269 metres above sea level, Lake Chūzenji brings a pause of water and mountains to a Nikko itinerary. It formed at the foot of Mount Nantai, and its shore has boat piers, walking routes and small visitor settlements; at the eastern end, Kegon Falls drops almost 100 metres into a gorge. The trip
Visitors often praise the mountain scenery, autumn colour and the chance to pair the lake with Kegon Falls. Some note that the experience depends on weather and road access can be slow in peak season. Boat services and some facilities are seasonal, so allow separate time for the visit and transport.

Kegon Falls concentrates the water leaving Lake Chūzenji into a single dramatic drop: the main cascade is 97 metres high and plunges down a rock face into a narrow gorge. The first view comes from a free upper platform, where the landscape makes the height and surrounding forest easy to understand.
Visitors praise the scale of the drop, the sound of the water and the lower platform’s view; autumn colour adds to the setting but also brings traffic. Some reviews find the visit brief or note that the elevator costs extra. The free upper viewpoint shows the falls without a ticket, while the lower platform changes the angle and brings visitors closer to the gorge wall.
