About Lake Chuzenji
At 1,269 metres above sea level, Lake Chūzenji brings a pause of water and mountains to a Nikko itinerary. It formed at the foot of Mount Nantai, and its shore has boat piers, walking routes and small visitor settlements; at the eastern end, Kegon Falls drops almost 100 metres into a gorge. The trip is not only about reaching a viewpoint: the change in altitude, forest and open water make the journey part of the scenery. In autumn, maples colour the slopes—and the same season turns the road into one of the region’s busiest.
Tobu buses run from Nikko Station to Chūzenji Onsen, with some services continuing towards Yumoto. From the Chūzenji Onsen stop, it is a short walk to the lake and the Kegon elevator entrance; sightseeing boats generally operate from April to November, with routes changing by season. Reviews praise the views and the ease of combining lake and waterfall, but note that autumn delays can exceed an hour by a wide margin. Do not overfill a day trip with stops: check bus conditions and leave a generous return buffer.
The lake has a shoreline of roughly 25 kilometres, so walking all the way around is unrealistic during a short visit. Choose one section, leave time for Kegon’s free upper viewpoint and decide whether the paid elevator or a boat fits the season. For October and November 2026, Tobu warns that foliage traffic can delay buses between the station and lake by more than two hours; it suggests that day-trippers who may not reach Oku-Nikko consider the NIKKO PASS WORLD HERITAGE AREA. Leaving early may help, but it cannot remove the uncertainty. If you have a fixed train connection, head back before peak congestion and avoid relying on the last bus.
