Study at FSCJ: admission, tuition, English pathways, and Jacksonville campuses

Admission, tuition, scholarships, academic English, and campus differences at Florida State College at Jacksonville.

In Jacksonville, the public college is not one address: Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) spans Duval County and also serves Nassau County. Campus choice changes the commute, nearby services, and sometimes where a program meets. Downtown offers trades and technical training near the civic core; Kent is part of Riverside-Avondale; North combines health sciences and athletics; South brings together arts, media, and student support; Deerwood serves the Southside, while Nassau Center is in Yulee. Cecil focuses on aviation and commercial driving, but its official materials give different addresses for the center and aviation area—confirm the building with FSCJ before travelling.

FSCJ was founded in 1965 as Florida Junior College. Its first classes met on August 22, 1966, in two temporary facilities; campuses that remain in use today were established over the following decades. It became Florida Community College at Jacksonville in 1986 and adopted its current name in 2009. The college says it serves more than 45,000 students annually and offers 13 bachelor’s degrees, more than 50 associate degrees, and over 100 technical certificates and workforce credentials. Students can start with general studies, transfer, or prepare for a trade, but each pathway has distinct requirements and timing.

Admission begins with an online application. The published fee is $25 for U.S. applicants and $80 for international F-1 students. Applicants may need official high-school and prior-college transcripts, a residency declaration for tuition purposes, orientation, and placement. FSCJ says recent PERT, SAT, or ACT results may support placement or an exemption depending on the record. Admission to the college does not guarantee a seat in a selective major: nursing, clinical programs, aviation, and some certificates may add requirements, deadlines, or limited capacity.

For lower-division credit courses, the published rate is $104.88 per credit for Florida residents and $401.27 for nonresidents; nonresident online courses are listed at $218.55 per credit. FSCJ estimates that 12 credits—the full-time load—cost about $1,259 in tuition and fees for a resident and $4,816 for a nonresident. That is not a complete budget: housing, food, transportation, books, and personal expenses are separate. Online classes add fees, and labs, supplies, insurance, or repeat courses can increase the total. Request an estimate for your actual schedule before deciding.

An Associate in Arts (A.A.) usually requires 60 credits and is designed for transfer to a university. FSCJ advertises an accelerated option that can take 18 months depending on course load and availability. Associate in Science (A.S.) degrees prepare students for a professional field or further study; technical and workforce certificates differ in credits, hands-on practice, and length. There is no single timeline for every major. Review the program map, note prerequisites, and ask whether labs or placements meet at the campus you can reach.

Students still learning English have two separate pathways. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) offers credit courses to build academic reading, writing, speaking, listening, and grammar before progressing into other coursework. A placement test assigns a level, and the catalog explains when students may combine EAP with regular classes. Adult ESOL is noncredit education with six levels, from foundations to advanced; it can support English development, GED preparation, or a step toward career training. Requirements and schedules differ. Ask whether your goal is general English, entry to a credit program, or an international-student requirement.

Financial aid begins with FAFSA and FSCJ’s scholarship application. The college lists Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, work-study, Bright Futures for eligible Florida students, and institutional grants. Eligibility depends on need, residency, enrollment, academic progress, and program. ScholarshipUniverse matches students with available opportunities; you must first apply for admission and receive account access, which FSCJ says may take seven to ten days. The aid office lists priority FAFSA dates of June 1 for fall, November 1 for spring, and April 1 for summer. Confirm the award year and each scholarship deadline: funding is not guaranteed, and some awards cover educational costs only.

Before choosing, ask practical questions: Which courses meet at that campus this term? Are placements at another location? What does a full schedule cost after fees? What English level does the program require? Which scholarships are still open? FSCJ publishes admissions, tuition, scholarships, EAP, and adult ESOL. The profiles below explain addresses and facilities and include route links to plan a visit.

The differences are concrete. Downtown Campus combines trades, hospitality, and student services; Kent Campus brings design, business, tutoring, and a fitness center together in Riverside-Avondale. North Campus offers health sciences, a dental clinic, medical simulation, and athletics, while South Campus connects arts, media, athletics, and the Wilson Center. Deerwood Center links distance learning with academic support; Nassau Center brings selected courses and outdoor education to Yulee. Cecil Center specializes in aviation and commercial driving and requires checking the exact entrance before travelling.

FSCJ’s community-access history opens options, but the decision should rest on a plan. Apply, settle your tuition residency, ask an advisor to map courses, calculate your net cost after aid, and confirm where each class meets. For tuition, clinical requirements, and scholarship dates, rely on the college’s current page rather than an old brochure.
