Maskay guide

Which movers serve all of Connecticut, and what permit should you check?

A guide to moving between Connecticut cities: what CTDOT requires of household-goods carriers, how to check a current certificate and what statewide coverage and services two in-state companies publish.

In Connecticut, distance alone does not determine which authority applies; what matters is whether the move crosses a state line. A move from Hartford to New Haven or Stamford to Mystic remains intrastate. Moving from Connecticut to New York, Rhode Island or Massachusetts also brings federal rules for interstate household-goods transportation into play.

The Department of Consumer Protection says in-state carriers need a Household Goods Carrier Certificate or Motor Contract Carrier Permit issued by the Department of Transportation (CTDOT). Movers must also provide a bill of lading after loading the goods. CTDOT’s 2026 roster lets consumers look up companies and certificate numbers, but the agency says it reflects the date it was published. Check the live eLicense record under search code RCHG before signing.

The estimate and contract deserve as much attention as the permit. CTDOT warns that many prices begin as estimates and can rise with volume, staffing, time or equipment, so it recommends asking for a binding quote. Its consumer guide explains that typical coverage in many contracts is calculated by weight and uses 60 cents per pound as a reference; any additional protection should be in writing. Request the inventory, price, access charges, dates and damage-claim procedure before handing over your belongings.

For an in-state move, two companies that publish statewide coverage and appear on CTDOT’s 2026 roster are CT Moving & Storage, based in Southington, and Major Movers Inc., based in Hamden. The former is listed as Flynn’s Motor Express Inc. DBA CT Moving and Storage, certificate 257; the latter received certificate HG1836 to carry household goods between Connecticut points from Hamden. This documents a state-operating requirement, not a quality rating or a guarantee of service.

The exact Google Maps profiles correspond to the Southington and Hamden addresses. Favorable comments for CT Moving & Storage mention advance coordination, floor and furniture protection, and help disassembling or reassembling pieces. Some customers on Major Movers’ listing describe punctuality, communication, careful handling and help loading rental trucks. These are individual accounts; use them to ask what materials, tasks and equipment will be included in your own service.

There is also an important distinction for long-distance moves. CT Moving & Storage advertises long-distance service, but the federal record for Flynn’s Motor Express shows authority for property except household goods; do not infer that this legal entity has federal authority for an interstate household move. Major Movers publishes statewide coverage, not a nationwide network. If your route leaves Connecticut, identify the carrier that will take the shipment and check its federal household-goods authority.

To compare proposals, give both companies the same inventory and full addresses, including floors, elevators, narrow stairs, parking and the distance to the truck. CT Moving & Storage offers an official form to request an estimate; Major Movers accepts requests through its quote form. The profiles of CT Moving & Storage in Southington and Major Movers Inc. in Hamden detail services, coverage and practical information.

Editorial guide checked on October 18, 2026 against CTDOT, FMCSA, official company pages and the exact Google Maps listings for each office. The 2026 state roster should be checked in eLicense before hiring. Companies describe their own services; advertised coverage does not guarantee availability for an address or date. Ratings and review counts are stored in metadata and are not repeated in the profiles.

Bottom line

For a route that stays within Connecticut, check the CTDOT certificate in eLicense (RCHG), the legal name on the contract and a binding estimate. If you cross a state line, also verify federal household-goods authority.
