In Colorado, “state aid” can mean two different lines on a bill: a need-based grant such as the Colorado Student Grant (CSG), or the College Opportunity Fund (COF), which reduces part of tuition per credit. Many students file FAFSA for financial-aid review; people who are not eligible for federal aid may use CASFA. Each tool has a different purpose, and the college aid office determines what appears in an offer.
FAFSA also lets a college consider a student for state aid. CASFA is the state route for people who do not file FAFSA; CDHE says to complete one application per year, not both. CASFA does not automatically award money or confer Pell eligibility: it lets participating colleges review state or institutional aid and receive the information the student lists. Check signatures, contributor invitations and school selection; the file remains incomplete if an electronic signature is missing.
Colorado Student Grant is need-based aid administered under institutional criteria and available funding. There is no single amount every Colorado resident receives. Thresholds published by CU Boulder apply to its own review and should not be treated as a statewide rule. Apply early, complete verification and ask your college for its priority date; the portal should say whether aid is estimated, confirmed or not awarded.
COF is not a living-cost grant: the state pays the college directly for part of eligible tuition per credit. The student applies for the fund and then authorizes its use; Colorado-resident undergraduates in eligible courses are the core group. Confirm the current year’s amount, which classes qualify and whether the bill reflects authorization. In August 2026, UCCS students described uncertainty about CSG; a Pikes Peak student said COF required manual authorization. These are campus accounts that help frame questions, not guarantees.
When comparing colleges, add net tuition after COF, grants and scholarships, then include fees, housing, food, books and transport. Ask whether you owe a balance while aid is processing and which withdrawal date avoids charges. Keep copies of FAFSA or CASFA, COF confirmation, portal tasks and notices. CDHE provides statewide guidance from Denver, but the college verifies eligibility and applies aid to the student account.
For 2027–28, CDHE lists FAFSA and CASFA as open as of October 12, 2026. Choose the application year that matches your enrollment term and confirm the college’s priority date and file status; submitting an application does not confirm a grant award.
