Which Colombian consulate serves the Midwest, and how do you arrange an appointment in Chicago?

The Consulate General of Colombia in Chicago serves twelve Midwestern states. This guide explains its services, appointment channels and a discrepancy to resolve before setting out: official pages and Google Maps show different suites at 333 North Michigan Avenue.

The Consulate General of Colombia in Chicago is the reference office for twelve Midwestern states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio and Wisconsin. The district tells visitors where to begin, but a mobile event announced for a nearby city is not a permanent branch. In 2026 the consulate listed mobile service dates in Detroit, Minneapolis, St Louis, Columbus, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Madison and Omaha; the published list ran through August and is no longer a future schedule at the time of this review.

The office resumed service on February 2, 2026 at 333 North Michigan Avenue, floor 12. We found a precise discrepancy worth making visible: the consulate’s contact page lists Suite 1220; a 2026 election notice and the Google Maps listing for “Consulate General of Colombia” in the same building show Suite 1200. We cannot confirm that the suites are interchangeable or correct one official source with another. We recommend checking the suite with the consulate before travelling. The local phone associated with the listing is 312-923-1196, and published general hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m.–2 p.m.

The services catalogue includes passports, national ID cards, identity cards, civil registrations, powers, minors’ travel permissions, consular cards, life certificates, residence certificates and other acts. The requirements page, for example, calls for personal attendance and valid Colombian identification for a passport; the consular-card procedure requires identification and proof of address, and the site says the card is issued the same day. Special powers and travel permissions require checking the appointment and original-document instructions. The official guide also says life certificates and some residence certificates do not require an appointment.

Chicago organises appointments by procedure. Its services page says specific powers, minors’ exit permits, ID duplicates and first-time ID, passports and consular cards are requested by text message to 312-202-3299; other matters—such as public deeds, civil registrations, nationality recovery or renunciation and some victim cases—are channelled by email. Payments described on the page are made by money order for the exact amount or debit/credit card; it says cash is not accepted. Before paying or sending documents, open the current procedure page because fees and channels can change.

We also found different SMS appointment windows: the hours page says to text on Monday or Tuesday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., while the services page limits requests to Monday during the same window. Both warn that appointments are by person and procedure and messages outside the stated window will not be processed. To avoid losing a week by following an outdated version, check the latest portal notice or email the official office before sending the message. Appointments should not be purchased from intermediaries.

On Google Maps, some reviews praise courteous staff, help with documents and an organised visit, while other individual accounts differ. Appointment planning and preparation recur in the comments. We do not treat these accounts as a forecast of how every service will turn out; they show the questions visitors bring and why it helps to arrive with the correct appointment, complete documents and time to spare. Official instructions remain the authority for requirements and availability.

The North Michigan Avenue address places the office in a central corridor, but the suite discrepancy and differing request days make a direct check worthwhile, especially for visitors coming from another state. Read the Consulate General of Colombia in Chicago profile, which brings together the address as stated by the sources, contact details and review context from the exact listing.

Guide checked on October 18, 2026 against Colombian Foreign Ministry pages and the exact Chicago Google Maps listing. The official contact page still shows Suite 1220, while a 2026 election notice and Maps show Suite 1200 in the same building; we flag the difference rather than choosing for the reader. Official pages also differ on which days to text for an appointment. Confirm the current location and channel before visiting.

Bottom line

Chicago handles procedures for twelve states and publishes extensive guidance on passports, identity documents, civil records, powers and other matters. Before travelling, check the procedure page to see whether an appointment is requested by text or email and on which day; the official pages are not consistent. Confirm the suite as well: 1200 appears on Maps and in a 2026 election notice, while the contact page shows 1220.
