Arizona Promise is a last-dollar state program for eligible students at Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona: it can cover qualifying tuition and mandatory fees left after other grants and scholarships. “Promise” does not mean an automatic check or a free ride for every expense. Housing, meals, parking, books and personal costs can remain, so compare the annual balance rather than the program name alone.
The statewide overview describes an Arizona resident, graduate of an Arizona high school with at least a 2.5 GPA and Pell-eligible student who enrolls at a participating university. Details and dates depend on the campus. ASU’s current page requires an admitted first-year student, FAFSA and verification documents, at least 12 in-person credits per term and Pell eligibility; ASU Online is excluded. Check NAU and UArizona for their own enrollment, campus and renewal rules before choosing.
For fall 2027 entry, ASU asks students to complete admission, official transcripts and FAFSA by April 1, 2027. ABOR encourages FAFSA by April 1 of senior year for priority consideration. Submit any requested verification too; then confirm Arizona residency for tuition, Pell processing and the right admission status. ASU scholarship deadlines may be earlier and are not replaced by the Promise date.
The amount is calculated after other eligible aid. If Pell and scholarships already cover tuition, the Promise amount may be zero without necessarily meaning a denial. ASU students in July 2026 described awards that had not appeared and asked about Pell or credit status. Those are individual accounts. Before committing, ask financial aid for a breakdown showing estimated eligibility, verification, final award and funds posted; update FAFSA if the university identifies an error.
Renewal depends on continuing annual requirements, generally FAFSA, residency, Pell, full-time enrollment and satisfactory progress. Also check legislative changes and available funding because state programs can change budget or names. Request separate estimates for tuition, mandatory fees, housing and meals, and ask what the campus covers with its own scholarships. ABOR provides the statewide framework from Phoenix; each university makes the individual award and account decisions.
The deadline needs context: ABOR encourages FAFSA by April 1 of senior year, while ASU lists April 1 for admission, FAFSA and verification documents for Arizona Promise; that is not the deadline for every ASU scholarship. As of October 12, 2026, use the campus page to confirm the 2027–28 cycle and ask for help if your residency or FAFSA status changes.
