About Toyama Glass Art Museum
Toyama Glass Art Museum occupies TOYAMA KIRARI, a civic complex in the city centre that brings together art and the public library. Architect Kengo Kuma shaped a façade inspired by the Tateyama range and an interior of local timber, glass and natural light, so the visit begins before you enter the galleries. Opened in 2015, the museum grew from a city policy to establish Toyama as a centre for glass rather than a collection detached from everyday urban life.
The permanent visit links the contemporary collection, Glass Art Passage and the sixth-floor Glass Art Garden, where installations made by Dale Chihuly’s studio fill the space with colour and transparency. The route moves between intimate objects and large-scale compositions. Visitors online praise both the architecture and the art, as well as the modest admission price; some expected a larger exhibition or are surprised that the complex also houses a library. Permanent admission costs ¥200 for adults and university students; high-school students and younger visitors enter free. Special exhibitions may charge separately.
From Toyama Station, take the city-loop tram to Grand Plaza-mae and walk for two minutes, or use the tram to Nishicho and walk for one minute. The museum is also about a 22-minute walk from the south exit. There is no visitor parking, so use a nearby car park or public transport. The permanent exhibition is open from 9:30 am to 6 pm, with last entry at 5:30 pm; it closes on the first and third Wednesdays and over New Year, while installation work can affect the calendar. Photography and filming are restricted in some galleries, so check each room’s signs before taking out your phone.
