About Sapporo TV Tower Observation Deck

At the eastern end of Odori Park, the TV Tower makes central Sapporo easy to read from above: follow the 1.5-kilometre green corridor, the avenues and, on clear days, the mountains around the city. The 147.2-metre structure was built as Sapporo began television broadcasting and opened in 1957. Its position near Susukino, the historic clock tower and the underground shopping passage lets you add a visit to a city walk without planning a separate excursion.

The visit is more compact than a trip up Mount Moiwa: an elevator takes you to the observation floor, where the view shifts with the season, from Odori’s flower beds and fountains to winter illuminations. Public comments often value the park’s orderly perspective and the convenient location; some visitors find the deck brief or question the ticket when the sky is cloudy. That distinction matters: the tower is best as a central stop with a signature city view, not as a replacement for a mountain panorama.

The published adult admission is ¥1,200. The observation deck is generally open from 9 am to 10 pm, with last entry at 9:50 pm, although the official calendar warns that events and maintenance can change the schedule. Tickets are sold on the third floor. From Sapporo Station you can walk above ground or use the underground connection towards Aurora Town and Odori, a useful option in rain or snow. The tower does not store luggage, so leave larger bags elsewhere.

Choosing between the tower and Moiwa is also a question of pace. The tower costs less, sits beside a central walking route and shows Odori’s geometry from downtown; the mountain gives a broader horizon but requires a ropeway, transfer and more time. When the weather is unsettled, the tower may be easier to fit in, though clouds can still obscure the view. Check the day’s hours and forecast, then pair the visit with a walk through the park rather than crossing Sapporo just for the elevator.
