About Irifuneyama Memorial Museum

Irifuneyama offers a more domestic scale than the maritime museum: the visit centres on the former official residence of the commander-in-chief of the Kure naval district. The western-style wooden house was completed in 1905 and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Walking through the grounds reveals a period when the port became central to Japan’s modernisation and military policy.

The residence pairs a western façade with Japanese interior spaces and preserves one of its distinctive features: kin-kara-kami, embossed decorative paper with gold and silver finishes. The compound also includes a local history museum, former service buildings and remains of the naval arsenal clock. Exhibits place the house within Kure’s urban and military life, and trace its later use by Allied occupation forces after the war.

Visitor reviews highlight the meeting of Japanese and western architecture, the handcrafted gold paper and the quiet garden. Some say the panels do not always provide enough context in other languages; others find the low admission and careful preservation make it worth a slow visit. This is not a vast palace: its interest lies in details—doors, paper, rooms and auxiliary buildings—that connect national history to a particular home.

The museum opens from 9 am to 5 pm, last admission 4:30 pm; it closes Tuesdays and 29 December–3 January. Adult admission is ¥250. From JR Kure Station, it is about a thirteen-minute walk, or take a bus to Irifuneyama Park. It pairs well with the Yamato Museum, but allow two or three hours for both if you want to read the exhibits and walk the grounds.
