About Koko-en Garden
Koko-en opened in 1992 on grounds connected with the former western residence of Himeji Castle, as part of the modern city’s centenary. Rather than one large park, it brings together nine walled gardens, each with a different pace: ponds, streams, bridges, pines and bamboo create changing scenes along the walk. Some paths frame the white keep between trees, offering another way to look at the castle.
Separate admission is ¥400 for adults and free for visitors under 18; the combined ticket with Himeji Castle is ¥2,600. The garden is open 9 am–5 pm, with last entry 30 minutes earlier. It usually closes December 29–30, though events may change the schedule. The Souju-an tea house serves matcha and a seasonal sweet overlooking the garden; check its conditions separately from the general opening hours.
Visitors often describe a carefully maintained space, mentioning tree reflections in the ponds, koi and autumn colours. After the castle stairs, the change of pace is welcome. Some say the gardens are smaller than expected; their appeal lies in a sequence of intimate spaces, not long distances. Photography spots can become busy, so alternate the central pond with the quieter side paths.
The garden is beside the castle at 68 Banchi Honmachi; phone +81 79-289-4120. Wheelchairs are available free of charge, but the grounds have slopes and the accessible route requires an accompanying person. Management asks visitors to stay on paths, avoid feeding fish and leave pets outside; eating is not allowed apart from bottled water. Allow 45–75 minutes, plus time for tea. Koko-en makes a calm ending to a monumental visit.
