About Kakiya Oyster Restaurant
Kakiya builds its entire menu around Hiroshima oysters. Its own menu leaves out meat and fish and focuses on different preparations: grilled and fried oysters, rice cooked with oyster broth, gratin and oysters preserved in oil. The restaurant says it buys directly from producers with whom it has longstanding relationships, highlighting oysters from Miyajima and Jigozen in Hiroshima Bay. That specialisation gives a meal on the way to the shrine a clear local focus rather than making it just another stop among souvenir shops.
The official menu describes a set that gathers several of the restaurant’s oyster dishes; check the menu on the day, as some items are seasonal and the restaurant’s own pages do not always show the same price. Raw oysters are available only for part of the year, while grilled and fried versions make an easy comparison of texture and flavour. Hiroshima lemon drinks, wine, sake and Japanese whisky are also listed. This is not the most flexible choice for a group that includes people who do not eat oysters: the restaurant’s identity lies in serving them almost exclusively.
Public comments often praise the grilled oysters, their freshness and the chance to sample several preparations in one set; the central location comes up as another advantage. Other visitors warn that Omotesandō gets busy around lunch, queues can form and prices reflect a much-visited island. Arriving before the lunch rush or choosing a smaller portion can make sense if the day includes other tastings. This is a specialist meal best enjoyed as a deliberate stop, rather than a compromise for the group.
Kakiya is at 539 Miyajimacho, in the middle of Omotesandō shopping arcade and about a ten-minute walk from the ferry pier according to the restaurant; some directories estimate seven minutes. The local tourism association lists usual hours of 10 am to 6 pm, with seasonal changes, irregular closing days and closure once oysters sell out; a current restaurant listing says it does not accept reservations. Confirm opening and availability before boarding, especially if arriving late.
