Relais Sant'Uffizio is a five-star hotel located in Cioccaro di Penango, in the province of Asti, within the Monferrato wine region of Piedmont. It occupies a former 16th-century monastery historically linked to the Dominican friars, to silk production and to events related to the Inquisition. The building, with its Renaissance ecclesiastical architecture, was restored and converted into a luxury hotel, with a renovation completed in 2026 that preserved its historic identity and reinterpreted it with contemporary comforts.

The complex blends into the landscape of vineyards, olive groves and hills of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The property retains materials characteristic of the area, such as red brick veneers and mint green shutters, and combines the solemnity of the original building with the comfort of a five-star hotel.

Rooms and suites

The hotel has 36 rooms and suites in Piedmontese style, with restored frescoes, original terracotta floors, selected textiles and custom-made furnishings. The restoration enhanced the rural character of the rooms and the monastic structure of the building. The offer includes:

• The Paul III Suite, on the main floor.
• The Sant'Uffizio Suite.
• The Rooftop Suites, with exposed-beam ceilings, floral decoration and oak floors.

A stay in any room includes access to the Aquanatura Wellness & SPA, the tennis court and the outdoor swimming pool in the private park.

Locanda del Sant'Uffizio Enrico Bartolini restaurant

The Locanda del Sant'Uffizio Enrico Bartolini restaurant holds two Michelin stars and is led by resident chef Gabriele Boffa. Its creative cuisine is inspired by tradition and Italian biodiversity, with dishes that incorporate truffle and selected local products. It occupies what was the monastery's lemon house and is guided by principles of authenticity, seasonality and experimentation. The hotel also has the Morus Cocktail & Lounge.

Aquanatura Wellness & SPA

The Aquanatura Wellness & SPA wellness centre offers panoramic views and facial and body treatments made with natural ingredients, inspired by phytotherapeutic recipes from the monastic tradition. Its facilities include a swimming pool with large windows facing the wooded park. The spa also offers a Day SPA option.

Events, weddings and meetings

The hotel has spaces for conferences, corporate meetings, team building, weddings and ceremonies. It is possible to book the entire property on a buyout basis, so that all areas are reserved exclusively for guests and can be customised according to the style of the event.

Surroundings and access

The hotel is located in Monferrato, less than an hour's drive from the Langhe area, in the heart of one of the Italian wine regions declared a World Heritage site. The surroundings offer vineyards, historic villages, wineries such as Tenuta Santa Caterina, Barbera and Barolo tastings, cultural itineraries and activities such as Vespa rides. It is approximately one hour and ten minutes from Turin Caselle Airport, one hour and thirty minutes from Milan Malpensa Airport and less than two hours from the northern Italian lakes, such as Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta. It also serves as a base for excursions to the Cinque Terre and the Alps.
