About Consular Section, Embassy of Japan in Iceland

Japan’s consular counter in Iceland operates within the Embassy in Reykjavik and handles documents for Japanese nationals as well as inquiries and visa applications for Japan. The processes are not interchangeable: passport and civil-status matters follow Japanese rules, while visa eligibility depends on the applicant’s nationality and residence.

The office is at Laugavegur 182, sixth floor, 105 Reykjavik; the main telephone is +354 510 8600 and the consular email is iceland-consul@rk.mofa.go.jp. The counter lists weekday service from 9:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., except official closures. The building has longer general hours, so use the Consular Section schedule when planning an in-person procedure.

Published services include passports, birth, marriage and other civil-status notifications, residence and signature certificates, overseas voting guidance, residence registration and safety support for Japanese nationals in Iceland. The Embassy also explains how to apply for a My Number card from abroad. Each procedure has its own requirements; the consular page provides forms and identifies when applicants must attend or contact the office first.

Visas require particular planning. The Embassy requires an appointment to submit an application; the applicant must appear in person both to submit documents and collect the passport. The published standard processing time is at least five working days and may be longer. People living far from Reykjavik are asked to contact the Embassy in advance. Its 24-hour English hotline provides general visa information only and cannot access a case file; applicants with pending cases should call the Embassy during office hours.

Before travelling, identify whether you need a Japanese document, a visa or a certificate, review the official original-document list and ask whether an appointment is needed. Icelandic citizens and other visa-exempt nationalities may have different short-stay entry rules from applicants who require a visa; exemptions do not cover every purpose or replace other permissions. The Embassy also notes that rules and fees change by fiscal year. We could not confidently attribute a Google Maps rating and review count to this exact location, so we have not reused metrics for nearby buildings.
