About Consular Office of Japan in Lyon
The office often called the “Japanese consulate in Lyon” is officially a Consular Office, not a Consulate-General, and its address is in Villeurbanne. It is listed at 131 boulevard de Stalingrad in the Lyon metropolitan area. Its jurisdiction covers Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and its twelve departments; ordinary residence determines which post handles a case.
For Japanese nationals, listed services include passports, travel documents, certificates, family-register and nationality matters, overseas-resident registration, overseas voting and My Number. Each document has its own requirements. Online filing or an electronic certificate may avoid a visit in some cases, but does not automatically remove the personal-attendance requirement for passport collection.
Visas use a separate channel. The 25 September 2026 update says standard categories require a telephone appointment and warns that the Japanese Embassy in Paris’s appointment email is for Paris only. Working-holiday schedules change by year: the office said some 2026 appointments would be reposted in mid-November and 2027 rules announced at the end of that month. Check availability before assembling documents or booking travel.
The office is at Le Prémium, 131 boulevard de Stalingrad, on the building’s eighth floor (the seventh French floor). From Part-Dieu, take metro B or tram T1/T4 to Charpennes and walk just under ten minutes; routes are also provided from Perrache and Bellecour. Counter hours are 9 a.m.–noon and 1:45–4:30 p.m. Office chief Shinya Iwata took up the post on 19 March 2026. Visas, cultural and economic enquiries have separate email addresses in addition to the general consular contact.
