Galerie Vivienne
Free pedestrian covered arcade with mosaics and shops near Palais-Royal.
About Galerie Vivienne
Galerie Vivienne opens a window onto Paris’s covered passages without an admission ticket. Inaugurated in 1826, it joins rue des Petits-Champs to rue Vivienne at an angle; light passes through its glass roof onto a mosaic floor. This is no staged museum but a privately owned arcade that still holds shops. Browsing the windows, noticing the architecture and walking through it changes the scale after the Louvre’s monumental façades.
The public passage opens daily from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., although each shop may keep different hours. Entrances include rue des Petits-Champs, rue Vivienne and rue de la Banque. The crossing can be short, but it rewards attention to the pattern underfoot and the roof above. The gallery says there are no public toilets and sets rules for bicycles, scooters and professional photography. The Tripadvisor listing showed 4.4 out of 5 from 424 reviews on October 1, 2026. Visitors particularly praised the mosaic floor and glass roof; several also noted that the passage is a short walk unless you stop at its shops.
It is particularly useful when the weather makes a longer outdoor walk less inviting, though the roof does not mean it is open at all hours. No purchase is needed to cross; cafés and shops charge for their products. History, access and rules come from the official Galerie Vivienne website.
