Maskay guide

What free places can you visit on foot near the Louvre?

Palais-Royal, Galerie Vivienne and Tuileries make a free walk among columns, mosaics and sculptures.

From Palais-Royal to the Tuileries: a free walk around the Louvre

The Louvre can shape a day even without entering its galleries. Around it, three publicly accessible places take visitors from a former seat of power to a nineteenth-century shopping arcade and then a sculpture-filled garden. The route needs no additional ticket, but closing hours matter: free does not mean open at night or available during every event.

Palais-Royal: gardens and columns

The Domaine national du Palais-Royal lies north of the Louvre. Daniel Buren’s columns stand in the Cour d’Honneur; inside, the garden enclosed by galleries offers a quieter pace. Its history joins royal residence and public life. Garden entry is free and self-guided. The official 8 rue Montpensier access opens from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. October through March and to 10:30 p.m. April through September. It rewards a pause rather than a rushed crossing.

Galerie Vivienne: a roof that changes the light

Continue toward the second arrondissement and enter Galerie Vivienne. Opened in 1826, its mosaic floor and glass roof provide a different experience from the avenues outside. Privately owned though it is, public passage is free daily from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Individual shops keep their own hours, and there are no public toilets. Crossing requires no purchase, but take time to notice the design that disappears in a hurried walk-through.

Tuileries: from museum to Concorde

Back by the Louvre, Jardin des Tuileries opens the long perspective toward Place de la Concorde. The museum, which manages the garden, traces its transition from royal grounds to public space and its sculptures from several periods. Entry is free year-round; October hours run from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Walk a short stretch, sit down or continue to Concorde according to your energy and the weather.

The route can be reversed from your hotel and does not require covering every path. Free access refers to the garden and arcade, not to Louvre admission or café purchases. Hours and history were checked with Palais-Royal, Galerie Vivienne and the Louvre.
