About Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière

Fourvière’s silhouette overlooks Lyon from the top of its hill. The climb changes the scale of the city: both rivers, the peninsula and the houses of Vieux Lyon come into view. Inside, the basilica pairs richly decorated mosaic interiors with a crypt that has its own opening hours. It remains an active place of worship, so a visit calls for respect for people at prayer as well as attention to its architecture. Architect Pierre Bossan designed the basilica in the 19th century, and work continued after his death; the building deserves more than a photograph from the esplanade. Four towers shape its outline, but inside, the contrast of stone, mosaics and chapels rewards a slower walk. The crypt below has a different scale and atmosphere within the same complex.

The basilica and crypt are free to enter. The basilica opens daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and to 9 p.m. on Sundays; the crypt opens from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. You can pause on the esplanade for the panorama without booking a guided visit. Tripadvisor visitors often praise the mosaics and views, while also mentioning crowds and the effort of the hill if they walk up. On the basilica’s Google listing, visitors praise both the interiors and the panorama. Some describe taking the funicular up and walking down; others warn about the steep climb or busy visiting hours. A photograph of the view does not tell the whole story of an active church: services take place and silence is requested in prayer areas. Free entry does not necessarily cover special guided visits, which are booked separately.

From Vieux Lyon, funicular F2 runs directly to Fourvière. The alternative walk through the Rosary Gardens takes about 25 minutes according to the basilica, but includes steps and a slope. A sensible route starts at the top, then continues down towards Lugdunum’s Roman theatres or the old quarter. Check the day’s services and notices: access within a working religious site can change for celebrations. The official address is 5 place de Fourvière, although the Maps listing places the basilica at number 8 on the same square. Funicular F2 leaves from Vieux Lyon; the basilica also lists bus 55 to Saint-Just and a roughly 25-minute uphill walk through the Rosary Gardens. To combine two stops without climbing twice, begin here and walk on towards Lugdunum. Check services, crypt hours and accessibility before travelling.
