Fourvière is visible from many Lyon streets, but the city takes a different shape from above. From the esplanade of the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, both rivers and the Presqu’île come into view. A short way downhill, Lugdunum: Roman Museum and Theatres’s Roman seating shows that this hill was a centre of life long before the modern city. How you go up matters: it determines how much energy remains for the sites.
Funicular F2 runs from Vieux Lyon station to the basilica. If you would rather walk, the basilica suggests the Rosary Gardens route and estimates about 25 minutes; expect a slope and steps. Taking F2 uphill and walking down lets many visitors enjoy the view without starting tired. The basilica and crypt are free. The church opens daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and to 9 p.m. on Sundays; the crypt closes at 6:30 p.m. Tourist visits should give way to worship during services.
The Roman museum and theatres are on the same hill. The outdoor theatre and odeon are free; the museum adds objects and interpretation. Standard admission listed in October 2026 was €4 without a temporary exhibition or €7 with one. It opens Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m.–6 p.m., and weekends, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. From October to April, the theatres close at 7 p.m., so do not leave them until after dark. Funicular F1 serves Minimes if you want to head straight to Lugdunum.
With two hours, the basilica, panorama and outdoor theatres make a coherent low-cost route. With half a day, add the museum before descending to Vieux Lyon. Bring water in hot weather; the seating is exposed. Check events and funicular service for your date. The right order depends more on mobility and available time than on a checklist of sights.

Fourvière’s silhouette overlooks Lyon from the top of its hill. The climb changes the scale of the city: both rivers, the peninsula and the houses of Vieux Lyon come into view. Inside, the basilica pairs richly decorated mosaic interiors with a crypt that has its own opening hours. It remains an act

Lugdunum: Roman Museum and Theatres
17 rue Cléberg, 69005 Lyon, France
Few places show Lyon’s layered past as clearly as Lugdunum. The large Roman theatre and the odeon remain visible on Fourvière’s slope; a museum built into the hillside brings together objects that explain life in the ancient city. The visit works best in two stages: gain context from the collection,
