About Bar André La Rochelle

Bar André has been part of life around La Rochelle’s Old Port since 1947, at 5 rue Saint-Jean-du-Pérot. The business recalls its beginnings as a small bar opposite the fishermen’s landing place and old fish market. Today it is a substantial brasserie with maritime décor, counter, terrace and a range stretching from coffee to seafood. Its place beside the towers makes a meal part of the historic walk, but the address offers more than a view. The current team presents seafood cooking by Johan Leclerre, a chef awarded the Meilleur Ouvrier de France title.

Its own menu describes local oysters and shellfish, fish dishes, daily suggestions and accompanying wines. The restaurant lists daily opening from 09:00 to 23:00 and continuous service, although it is wise to check which cooked dishes are available at a given hour. Diners often praise the seafood and lively brasserie atmosphere; others report delays or uneven coordination when the room is busy. An institution’s reputation does not mean every table will move at the same pace.

From the Tour de la Chaîne, walk around the edge of the harbour to reach the street. For a full meal, consider booking and ask about the day’s fish; a short stop at the counter or for shellfish is a different proposition. The national monuments operator says the Tour Saint-Nicolas remains closed to visits until further notice, so do not plan lunch around a climb of all three towers. Bar André suits those who want the energy of a port brasserie and a broad menu, with patience at peak times.
