Maskay guide

Where can you eat seafood after visiting La Rochelle’s Old Port towers?

A historic brasserie and a small oyster bar extend the Old Port walk in distinctly different ways.

La Rochelle’s Old Port opens between medieval towers that recall the Atlantic city’s trade and defences. Check the monuments operator’s notice before planning a climb: the Tour Saint-Nicolas remains closed until further notice, while the Chaîne and Lanterne towers can be visited. Coming down towards the quays, the question changes from stone to table. Should you settle into a historic fish brasserie or stop at a smaller oyster counter? Both are walkable from the harbour, but they suit different appetites and schedules.

Bar André La Rochelle is at 5 rue Saint-Jean-du-Pérot. The business dates its place in the port to 1947, when fishermen and the old fish market shaped the surroundings. Today it has a terrace, counter and broad menu of oysters, shellfish and cooked fish. It opens throughout the day and lists continuous service, although you should check when particular hot dishes are available. Diners remember its lively brasserie setting and seafood; other accounts describe long waits or uneven service when busy. Its long history does not erase that variation.

Le Comptoir Saoufé La Rochelle, at 12 rue du Port, offers a more focused stop. Its website does more than claim “local produce”: it names suppliers and presents oysters from Les Boucholeurs alongside whelks, prawns, soups and wine. The menu changes with the season. Visitors praise freshness and conversation about the food’s origins, though the small room may mean a wait. The business says it does not take reservations; Tuesday depends on the season and Wednesday is listed as closed. If a train leaves soon, do not turn this spontaneous stop into a race.

A route can begin at the Tour de la Chaîne, follow the waterfront and then choose the kind of meal. Bar André works better for a complete sit-down lunch when companions want different dishes. Le Comptoir Saoufé centres attention on oysters and provenance, useful if you would rather taste a few things and continue. At either address, ask what seafood has arrived and what is actually being served at that hour. The harbour is a reason to eat here, but the decision depends on menu, venue size and available time.

One final check makes the day easier: consult the monument’s site for the open towers and do not assume an old ticket allows a climb of Saint-Nicolas. Then book Bar André if you need control over the timing of a long meal, or leave room in your schedule to find a table at Saoufé. The visit needs no absolute “best seafood” claim; it needs a stop that fits the walk and what each traveller wants from the Atlantic on a plate.

Bottom line

Bar André offers a broad brasserie meal; Le Comptoir Saoufé focuses the stop on oysters and local producers, without reservations.
