About Café Goldegg

Café Goldegg stands at the corner of Argentinierstraße and Goldeggasse in Wieden, a walk from the Upper Belvedere entrance. It opened in 1910 as Café Dobner, according to the business, and carries a history less decorative than an imperial postcard: its website recalls meetings here by persecuted railway workers and revolutionary socialists under Nazism. The rooms were restored in the late 1980s. Inlaid wood, marble tables and green velvet seats turn that history into a space still used as an everyday coffeehouse.

Coffee and tea share the menu with fresh cakes and main dishes. There is no need to order a full lunch to make the stop worthwhile: after the Belvedere galleries, a coffee and cake offer a seat without a detour into the historic centre. The café provides newspapers, retains a billiard table and says dogs are welcome. It opens at eight on weekdays and nine at weekends, normally closing at eight in the evening, with a shorter January schedule. Its published telephone number is +43 699 1999 9981.

Customers often praise the old interior, breakfasts and hospitality; some also criticise waiting times or the bill on their particular visit. Choose it for its closeness to Belvedere and neighbourhood character rather than expecting rapid service at a busy hour. From the Upper Palace, the route along Goldeggasse avoids a needless return towards the Ring. Before deciding on breakfast or an afternoon stop, read the current menu and check whether the kitchen serves your chosen dish at that hour.
