About Hentley Farm
Hentley Farm: single-vineyard winery and restaurant in the Barossa Valley
Hentley Farm is an Australian winery established in 1997 by Keith and Alison Hentschke with the aim of producing single-vineyard wines in the Barossa Valley. Its activities combine winemaking with a restaurant and a cellar door located in an 1840s heritage cottage in Seppeltsfield, South Australia.
Two estate vineyards with distinct characteristics
The winery works with two estate-owned vineyards. The Seppeltsfield vineyard, planted in 1997, spans 39 hectares at an altitude of between 300 and 420 metres, with red clay soils over fragmented limestone, siltstone and bluestone subsoils. It is planted with Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier and Zinfandel. The company presents it as one of Australia's most awarded vineyards for more than fifteen years, with particular mention of the diversity of its blocks.
The Mount Crawford vineyard, established in 1999 by Robin Day, borders the Adelaide Hills and is the coolest site in the region. Its 13.7 hectares sit at 450 metres altitude on ironstone and deep sandy soils, and are home to varieties such as Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Saperavi, Lagrein, Nebbiolo, Garganega, Grenache, Riesling and Gamay, many of them initially planted on an experimental basis.
Winemaking and winemaking team
The winemaking team works with a precision-driven approach: it assesses each block and even each sub-row at harvest to determine optimal ripeness, and some vines are picked in several passes over the season. Head winemaker Andrew Quin applies a minimal-intervention philosophy aimed at balanced, powerful and elegant wines, with the vibrancy, silky tannins and aromatic intensity that the winery identifies as its signature. The company also states a commitment to sustainable practices.
Wines and collections
The range is organised into several lines. These include Icon Wines, Luxury Wines, Farm Wines, Barossa Wines and the Villain & Vixen range, the latter made from grapes sourced from selected Barossa vineyards. The collection also includes cellar-worthy wines.
- Clos Otto Shiraz: comes from a vineyard planted by the previous owner, Otto Kasper, from a cutting of an old, undisclosed Shiraz clone. It is farmed with old machinery and produces very low yields with highly concentrated flavours.
- The Creation Project: an annual limited release single-block wine created by the head winemaker, intended to reflect the diversity of the estate's terroirs and the characteristics of each vintage.
- Côtes De Hentley: a selection of the finest barrels from the finest vintages, with grapes from the Seppeltsfield vineyard.
- The Beast Shiraz: a single-block Shiraz, bold in structure and layered with depth.
Restaurant and dining experience
Hentley Farm's restaurant is located within the Seppeltsfield vineyard, with views over Greenock Creek and the Beauty Shiraz block. It offers a multi-course dining journey, with an optional pairing of estate wines from the Seppeltsfield and Mount Crawford vineyards. The culinary offering, led by its chefs, is based on seasonal and sustainable produce, foraged from the area around Greenock Creek, grown in the estate's garden beds or sourced from local farmers and growers. Reservations are essential.
The restaurant was recognised as South Australian Restaurant of the Year 2026 at the Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence.
Cellar door and membership
The cellar door is open seven days a week, from 10:00 to 16:00, with reservations essential. The experience consists of a guided tasting in an 1840s heritage cottage, with selections that showcase the diversity of the company's wines. The winery also sells gift cards redeemable for tastings, dining experiences or wines.
The membership programme gives access to limited releases, invitations to members' events and exclusive pricing.
Western Ranges Project and events
Hentley Farm participates in The Western Ranges Project, a collaboration between four leading Barossa wineries. The winery also organises a series of its own events in various locations across Australia.
