About Tarts Anon

Tarts Anon, sweet and savoury tart bakery in Melbourne

Tarts Anon is an Australian bakery based in Melbourne that focuses its entire operation on a single product: the tart. Its approach consists of making sweet and savoury tarts by combining refined technique and an accessible style, with the stated goal of offering a world-class dessert experience in a bakery setting away from the usual circuits. The menu rotates every month: the counters feature new tarts alongside returning favourites.

The business began as a side project during Melbourne's 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. Its co-founders, Gareth Whitton and Catherine Way, started making tarts at home; word of their quality spread through the neighbourhood and turned the project into a cult home bakery within weeks. The concept outgrew the home kitchen and in September 2021 Tarts Anon opened its flagship location in Cremorne, Victoria.

Two locations in Melbourne

The company operates two establishments in the city. The flagship store is in Richmond, inside building number 10 of a business park, and the second is in Collingwood, inside a bike shop. The company describes its offering as a top-tier dessert experience in an unconventional bakery setting.

Sweet and savoury tarts with a monthly rotation

The menu consists exclusively of tarts, in sweet and savoury versions, with a selection that is renewed every month and includes both new items and recipes that return by popular demand. The company recommends ordering in advance, although it does not consider it essential, and offers the option to reserve slices through its website.

Coffee and signature drinks

Alongside the tarts, Tarts Anon serves coffee with Square One Coffee beans and Monk's Chai, as well as a list of specialty iced drinks and house-made hot chocolates. The service is available both for dine-in and takeaway.

Catering for events and businesses

The company provides catering for events, corporate functions and weddings, with mini tart and whole tart formats. It offers pickup and delivery seven days a week.

Team and experience

The team numbers more than fifteen people, including chefs, baristas and front-of-house staff. The kitchen is led by professionals with accumulated experience at some of the best restaurants and bakeries in Australia and the world. Gareth Whitton himself has more than eighteen years of experience as a fine dining pastry chef.

Shop and complementary products

In addition to the tarts, the company sells electronic gift cards, its own merchandise — including a heavy cotton T-shirt designed by the local studio Good Ideas Studio, in Footscray, with nationwide shipping — and a cookbook. It also offers wholesale and collaborations with other brands.
