About Tsaghkunk Restaurant & Glkhatun

Tsaghkunk Restaurant & Glkhatun: heritage Armenian cuisine in Tsaghkunk village

Tsaghkunk Restaurant & Glkhatun is a dining establishment located in the heart of Tsaghkunk village, about an hour's drive from Yerevan. Founded in 2021 as part of the Gagarin Project, the restaurant presents itself as a project that seeks to support Armenian rural communities while offering a culinary and cultural experience rooted in the traditions and heritage of the region. Its approach focuses on progressive heritage Armenian cuisine, with locally sourced ingredients and recipes reinterpreted with a contemporary touch.

The Tsaghkunk Experience

The restaurant has designed the "Tsaghkunk Experience", a journey that begins with a welcome drink and continues with a visit to a glkhatun located a minute's walk away. This glkhatun, a traditional house with a wooden and earthen roof dating back to the late 18th century, offers a unique atmosphere where local artisans Anna and Gohar demonstrate the traditional making of lavash bread in a tonir. Visitors can watch and take part in the process, as well as taste a selection of homemade cheeses, cured meats and other local delicacies. Among the dishes prepared in the tonir, panrkhash stands out, described as a signature dish of Armenian culinary heritage. After the visit to the glkhatun, guests return to the restaurant to enjoy a seven-course tasting menu that explores the traditions of Armenian cuisine with a contemporary touch from chef Arevik Martirosyan. The price indicated for this experience is 28,000 AMD per person.

Menu and dining offer

The restaurant offers an à la carte menu that changes with the seasons to highlight the natural flavours of each moment. The selection includes dishes that reinterpret Armenian cuisine with a modern approach, with special attention to endemic products from Lake Sevan and its surroundings, such as fish, meats, wild herbs and berries. The wine list is made up exclusively of Armenian wines, mostly from family-owned wineries. In addition, the establishment has a selection of main courses, drinks and cocktails.

Local produce and regenerative agriculture

The restaurant's kitchen is largely supplied by the ARTER organic farm, located in the same community. ARTER is part of the Gagarin Project and is dedicated to mountain regenerative agriculture to provide high-quality organic produce. The restaurant also maintains partnerships with local farmers and suppliers to guarantee the quality and freshness of the ingredients. This collaboration is part of the establishment's philosophy of celebrating Armenian ingredients, local production and traditional recipes.

Events and the Armenian Quest project

The restaurant is part of the Armenian Quest project, whose mission is to discover Armenia's contemporary culinary language through its history, culture, heritage, products and people. The project organises visits by renowned chefs who, after exploring the country's richness, offer exclusive dinners at the establishment. These culinary experiences seek to celebrate creativity and the art of gastronomy. Past events include a charity dinner in collaboration with Momed restaurant in Los Angeles, held on 18 May at 17:30 at Momed Restaurant, in support of Teach For Armenia. The restaurant also invites guests to subscribe to a newsletter to receive information about events.

Commitment to the local community

The restaurant collaborates with the Gagarin Project and, since its beginnings, has built its team with members of the local community. The kitchen and service teams are made up entirely of people from nearby communities, and local young people are actively encouraged to learn and develop in hospitality professions. This practice reflects the establishment's commitment to sustainable development and the well-being of the region.

Recognition and reviews

The restaurant has been mentioned in media such as Vice, Diario Correo and Forbes. Visitor reviews highlight the quality of the food, the design of the space, the lavash-making experience and the attentiveness of the staff. Some comments emphasise the traditional Armenian cuisine proposal with local products and the Armenian wine list. The establishment has also been included in La Liste's Discovery Gem Award 2025 list.
