Garyu Sanso is a villa rather than a castle, and its position above the Hijikawa gorge shapes nearly every room and garden view. The residence was built between 1907 and 1913 for local businessman and wax merchant Torajiro Kouchi, who brought skilled craftsmen to Ozu to create a retreat in the sukiya style. Its main house, garden and Furo-an tea house are now recognised as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The result is a place where architecture is designed to frame the landscape instead of dominate it.
A visit moves through tatami rooms, carefully placed openings and garden paths toward the small Furo-an pavilion perched above the river. Rather than treating the villa as a single grand hall, notice how the view changes with each threshold: rooflines, water, stone and trees enter the composition in different proportions. The local tourism association describes the villa as a refined example of sukiya architecture; the quiet setting gives visitors time to look closely at joinery and the relation between rooms and garden.
Visitor feedback often celebrates the craftsmanship, the views over the Hijikawa and the calm of the garden; some describe it as more memorable than its modest scale suggests. A few visitors expect a larger house or a more extensive indoor exhibition and may find the admission less compelling if they are interested mainly in objects rather than design. The site is best suited to travellers who appreciate architecture, gardens and landscape. Walking surfaces and stone steps require care, especially after rain.
The address is 411-2 Ozu, open year-round from 9 am to 5 pm with last entry at 4:30 pm. Adult admission is ¥550, and the combined ticket with Ozu Castle costs ¥880. The two sites can be linked by a walk through the historic town; the city estimates roughly 30 minutes on foot from Iyo-Ozu Station to the castle, while Garyu Sanso is farther along the riverside route. A tea service is offered only on selected days and seasons, so do not assume it is available without checking the official notices.
