About Tudor Place Historic House & Garden

Tudor Place was home to six generations of Martha Washington’s descendants; today it is a house museum and 5.5-acre garden on a residential Georgetown street. The institution cares for more than 18,000 objects and presents the family’s history alongside that of the enslaved and free people who lived and worked there. The visit does not reduce the site to an elegant façade: the house, its objects and the garden help explain how wealth was created and passed on in the American capital.

The house is open by guided tour only, while visitors can explore the gardens on their own. Comments often value the staff, guides’ stories and quiet grounds; some visitors have found rooms closed or a visit different from what they expected, so check the available format before going. The listing checked showed 4.5/5 from 616 opinions. Admission is by suggested donation: $10 for adults and $5 for seniors, students, military and children aged 6–18; children under five enter free.

Tudor Place is at 1644 31st Street NW, Washington, DC 20007; phone (202) 965-0400. It opens Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.; the last guided house tour begins at 3 p.m. and garden entry ends before closing. It is about six blocks north of the intersection of M Street and Wisconsin Avenue. The institution recommends booking, although walk-ins are accommodated when space allows; groups of ten or more must arrange their visit in advance.
