About National GEM Consortium Graduate Engineering and Science Fellowships
The National GEM Consortium connects engineering and applied-science talent with graduate study, financial support, and internships at member organizations. The 2027 cycle is open in eGEM for master’s and doctoral pathways; fellowships are valid only at GEM member universities, whose graduate departments run their own admissions process. Fellowship selection and university admission are separate decisions.
Programs may accept college seniors, current graduate students, and graduates returning to school, depending on the pathway. The general page requires U.S. citizenship or permanent residence and a 3.0 minimum GPA; the master’s engineering pathway may start at 2.8 while doctoral rules specify 3.0, so the individual program governs. Selected fellows must agree to an internship with a GEM employer in the applicable summer.
The annual application opens July 1 and closes on the second Friday in November; for the 2027 cycle, the portal lists November 13, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern. Prepare a résumé, unofficial transcript, and statement of purpose of at least one page. Request three recommendations and ensure at least two arrive online by the deadline. Applicants must later seek admission to three member universities, unless they meet the documented exception for certain already-enrolled 4+1 programs.
Support may include employer sponsorship, a stipend, and tuition assistance depending on the pathway; amounts and duration differ between MS and PhD programs, so there is no single figure to assume. Fellows also meet internship and admission obligations and must confirm university funding. Check the graduate department’s calendar: GEM does not replace admission requirements or fund online programs.
