About DC Department of Aging and Community Living — Information, Referral and Nutrition

In Washington, DC, the Department of Aging and Community Living (DACL) is a starting point for older adults, residents with disabilities, and caregivers seeking support. Its Information & Referral/Assistance (I&RA) unit conducts an initial assessment and connects people with nutrition, transportation, housing, benefits, activities, and long-term services. A referral helps navigate the system, but it does not replace an application or guarantee a provider opening.

I&RA serves adults age 60 and older, people with disabilities ages 18 to 59, and caregivers. The published number is (202) 724-5626, Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; email is askthedirector.dacl@dc.gov. DACL and the Aging and Disability Resource Center are at 500 K Street NE, Washington, DC 20002. To make the call productive, explain the home address, the immediate need, and whether there is a risk of losing housing, difficulty traveling, or a recent hospital discharge.

Nutrition has a broad network: DACL’s FY26 directory lists 45 community meal sites across all eight wards, alongside prepared meals delivered to residents age 60 and older. Spouses of homebound adults or adults with disabilities may qualify in some circumstances. Individual nutrition counseling and education are also available. Call I&RA at 202-724-5626 to confirm current schedules, find a nearby location, and request delivery screening. The DACL profile presents each address in a list with a Google Maps route.

The Food4Choice pilot shown on the city page reached capacity and is not accepting new participants, so it should not be presented as an open option. If the need is a diet related to a health condition, ask about nutrition counseling and the Meals on Wheels or authorized-provider pathway. DACL publishes an annual list of meal sites; confirm schedules, language access, physical accessibility, and transportation before traveling.

The ADRC also helps residents with SNAP and Medicaid applications, options counseling, long-term-care planning, hospital or nursing-home discharge, the DC Caregivers Institute, and Lifespan Respite. For a case needing social work, ask how to request a case manager; for Medicaid medical benefits, DACL directs callers to the DHS Public Benefits Call Center. Have the ZIP code, age, insurance, approximate income, medications, and caregiver’s name ready so the referral reaches the right program.
