About Southern Endodontic Center
Southern Endodontic Center: Specialized Endodontics in South Georgia
Southern Endodontic Center is a clinic dedicated to endodontics, serving Valdosta and the surrounding communities from its main office on Kings Way in Valdosta, Georgia. In addition to this location, the center has offices in Thomasville and Waycross, allowing it to meet the demand for endodontic treatment in various communities across southern Georgia.
The clinic works with both patients referred by other professionals and new or returning patients continuing their treatment. A significant portion of its activity revolves around referrals from dentists, and the clinic maintains a dedicated section of information for referring doctors.
Endodontic Treatments Offered
The range of services focuses on procedures specific to the specialty:
- Root Canal Treatment: a common procedure to save the natural tooth and avoid the need for dental implants or bridges. The clinic explains that pulp infection can be caused by trauma, deep decay, cracks or fractures, or repeated dental procedures, and that it manifests as pain, sensitivity to temperature, or swelling.
- Endodontic Retreatment: indicated when a tooth that has already been treated fails to heal or continues to hurt, even months or years after the procedure. The team reopens the tooth, removes the filling material, cleans and examines the canals, and reseals them, leaving a temporary filling.
- Apicoectomy: a surgical procedure used when root canal treatment alone is not enough to resolve the problem. It allows the doctor to locate fractures or hidden canals that do not appear on x-rays but continue to cause pain, and to treat damaged root surfaces or the surrounding bone. An incision is made in the gum, the inflamed tissue and the end of the root are removed, a root-end filling is placed, and the gum is sutured; the bone naturally regenerates over several months.
Professional Team
The medical staff consists of three doctors of dental medicine:
- Edwin L. Lamb, D.M.D.: graduated from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry in 1986. He completed a specialty certificate in Periodontics at the University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Dentistry and maintained a private practice limited to periodontics and dental implants for twelve years before returning to the Medical College of Georgia, where he earned his specialty certificate in Endodontics in 2002.
- Robert M. Pearson, D.M.D.: earned his dental degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1995. He completed a one-year general dentistry residency at Fort Benning, Georgia, and after four years of general practice, trained in endodontics through the U.S. Army residency program at Fort Gordon, Georgia, where he received his specialty certificate in 2001.
- Jason McGovern, D.M.D.: graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 2006. He practiced general dentistry for fourteen years in Tifton, Georgia, before joining the endodontics residency program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he earned his specialty certificate in 2022.
All three doctors are members of the American Dental Association, the Georgia Dental Association, and the American Association of Endodontists; McGovern is also a member of the OKU Dental Honor Society.
