About HOPE Scholarship — Georgia Student Finance Commission
Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship is a state merit award that helps pay part of tuition at eligible public and private colleges and universities. It is administered by the Georgia Student Finance Commission through GAfutures. It is not a private fund that students approach with a general letter: applicants must meet residency, citizenship or eligible immigration-status rules, enroll at a participating institution and satisfy state academic criteria.
For a high-school graduate, the commission calculates the HOPE GPA from core academic courses reported by the school; it may differ from the cumulative GPA on a report card. In general, HOPE requires a state-calculated 3.0 GPA and rigorous courses, while Zell Miller has a higher bar. The college checks eligibility and calculates the award by institution and eligible hours; amounts can change from term to term. The My High School HOPE GPA tool lets students check the state calculation before planning a budget.
Students may apply through the FAFSA, which must be completed each year, or through Georgia’s GSFAPP. For HOPE, the deadline is the last day of the academic term or the student’s withdrawal date, whichever comes first; the commission recommends applying early and checking whether the college requires additional forms. GSFC’s contact center lists 800-505-4732, option 1, and its office is at 2082 East Exchange Place, Tucker. Ask the college financial-aid office to confirm receipt and identify any missing records.
