New Jersey Tuition Aid Grant (TAG)

The Tuition Aid Grant, or TAG, is one of New Jersey’s main need-based programs for residents attending an eligible college in the state. HESAA says it supports about one-third of New Jersey residents enrolled full time in undergraduate programs at in-state institutions. It is not guaranteed for everyone: household income, tuition, residency, academic level, and annual funding affect eligibility and award size.

About New Jersey Tuition Aid Grant (TAG)

It is not guaranteed for everyone: household income, tuition, residency, academic level, and annual funding affect eligibility and award size.

The process generally begins with FAFSA. Students unable to file FAFSA because of status should review the NJ Alternative Financial Aid Application. Then create or check an NJFAMS account and submit any documents listed as action items. First-time TAG applicants may have additional steps from HESAA; do not assume the federal form completed every state requirement.

For 2026–27, HESAA set September 15, 2026, for new fall-and-spring applicants; as of October 13, that date has passed. Students starting only in spring 2027 may submit through February 15, 2027, then complete any NJFAMS state-record tasks by the applicable date. Confirm the HESAA cycle calendar and your college’s own deadline, which may be earlier. Awards are not uniform and can change by year. Use the estimator as a planning tool and wait for the official offer before deciding how much to borrow.

To estimate the real cost, ask the institution for a written breakdown of tuition, fees, housing, and expenses the award does not cover. Confirm renewal, academic-progress rules, and when funds are credited. Keep the award letter and application receipts.
