About Kansas Promise Act Scholarship

Kansas Promise funds certificates and two-year associate programs in fields identified as high wage, high demand, or critical need at participating institutions. It is last-dollar aid: it may cover eligible tuition, required fees, books, and materials after other non-loan aid is deducted. The lifetime cap is 68 credits or $20,000, whichever comes first; the institution calculates the final award based on the program, FAFSA, and financial-aid package.

For Spring 2027, the published state deadline is March 1; the Fall 2026 date of October 1 has passed. Eligibility includes U.S. citizenship, Kansas residency, and household-income limits, plus several ways to meet the high-school/residency condition. Students must enroll in at least six credits per term, submit FAFSA, and sign an agreement. The approved-program and institution lists control where the award can be used; Promise does not fund bachelor’s degrees as a program.

The service obligation is central: recipients must finish the program within 36 months and live and work in Kansas for two consecutive years afterward. Failure may require repayment with interest unless an authorized exception or deferral applies; military service and continued study may follow special rules. Before accepting, consider whether you can meet the work commitment and ask the institution to explain in writing which aid reduces the Promise balance.
