About Rosewood Family Scholarship

The Rosewood Family Scholarship serves a narrowly defined group: up to 50 students who can document direct descent from families affected by the events in Rosewood in January 1923. It may be used at Florida state universities, Florida College System institutions, or public postsecondary technical centers in the state. The program recognizes a specific part of Florida history, but it is not a general scholarship for local residents; genealogical documentation and direct family connection are central to the application.

For 2027–28, OSFA says the Florida Financial Aid Application opened October 1, 2026 and must be complete and error-free by April 1, 2027. Students must also submit the FAFSA for federal processing by May 15, 2027 and provide ancestry documentation by the April deadline. Birth certificates and marriage records may help establish the family chain, but the file must connect the applicant to the affected Rosewood family member.

Funding depends on annual legislative appropriations. State law limits the award to eligible charges and permits prorating, so do not budget a fixed annual amount without checking the current fact sheet and award letter. The application asks about ancestry, and the office may request further records through its secure document channel. Keep certified translations if required, copies of every submitted document, and proof that files were uploaded.

After applying, check the OSFA account and respond promptly to any request for clarification. The 2027–28 fact sheet says applications may be ranked by submission date if necessary and that the number of recipients is capped. Ask the institution’s financial-aid office how funds will post and which costs remain uncovered. A useful early step is to collect vital records well before the deadline and request written confirmation that the family documentation is sufficient.

Ask financial aid for a term-by-term estimate separating tuition, fees, housing, and other expenses. Keep the award decision, any service or loan agreement, and renewal records. If your studies, residence, or employment change, contact the administrator before making a decision that could affect the aid.
