About Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania places the region's operating tourist railway within a much larger industrial story. Opened to the public in April 1975, the state museum preserves locomotives and cars made or operated in Pennsylvania, alongside the tools, records and everyday objects of railway work and travel. Its scope extends beyond the company called the Pennsylvania Railroad.
The collection includes more than 100 historically significant locomotives and railroad cars. In the main hall, reconstructed station and streetscape settings help explain the world around that equipment. Documents, photographs, uniforms and signs widen the interpretation from engineering to the people who built, maintained and used the network.
The large indoor exhibition space provides an alternative to an outdoor excursion, but it still involves substantial walking. Most of the main hall is wheelchair accessible, and an elevator reaches the upper gallery and observation bridge. Historic vehicle interiors have narrower doors and steeper access; the equipment open for entry varies daily. Virtual tours offer views inside selected pieces that cannot be entered easily.
Current opening days are Wednesday through Sunday, with a later start on Sunday and last admission at 3:30 p.m. The 2026 holiday calendar specifically lists closures on October 12 and November 11, among other dates. Admission is separate from Strasburg Rail Road. The museum is particularly useful for visitors who want to connect a memorable train ride with the labor, manufacturing and transportation systems that made railways central to Pennsylvania.
