About Paytient
Paytient and the Health Payment Account for employers and health plans
Paytient is a healthcare financing platform that markets an interest-free Health Payment Account (HPA). Its offering targets employers, brokers and consultants, insurers, health systems, and individuals, with the stated goal of eliminating cost as a barrier to accessing healthcare. The company maintains that true access requires purchasing power, not just coverage, and positions its product as a way for members to access treatment earlier, employers to save, and providers to get paid in full.
Core product: Health Payment Account
The Health Payment Account is an interest-free line of credit, subject to approval, that works with providers in approved merchant categories. It requires no credit check and has no hidden fees, and charges made with the card must be repaid according to the terms of the cardholder agreement. The Paytient Visa® card is issued by Commerce Bank, Member FDIC, and Paytient Technologies, Inc. operates under the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS) with ID 2040265. The card cannot be used to pay health insurance premiums.
The product is presented as an alternative that does not depend on credit scores or approvals, and that allows members to choose the care that fits their needs, values, and priorities. The company states that 97% of members say Paytient relieves financial stress.
Solutions for employers, brokers, insurers, and health systems
Paytient structures its offering around several customer profiles. For employers, it aims to reduce cost as a barrier to care, improve retention, engagement, and productivity, and provide transparent insights into out-of-pocket spending trends to optimize plan design. For brokers and consultants, it is presented as a modern benefits solution that helps clients cut costs and turnover, and that works with any health plan. For insurers, it proposes building affordability into the plan, channeling maximum spend toward timely care, and improving medication pickup and preventive care rates. For health systems, it is aimed at attracting patients who pay in full and freeing up time and resources.
The company also offers an M3P solution for administration and repayment, and white-labeled affordability solutions for integrated partners.
Impact data and spending visibility
Paytient states it has facilitated more than $500 million in personal healthcare spending. Its platform generates insights into team healthcare spending, with visibility into out-of-pocket trends on a dashboard, data-driven benefits design optimization, and employee engagement tracking. The company lists Stephens College, Merrillville Community School Corp, and Shasta Industries among its clients, and includes testimonials from HR leaders and educators about using the card for dental expenses and improving the benefits offered.
Member access and compliance
Members can use the app or the card at the point of care. The card works with providers in approved merchant categories, including select online merchants; the provider selects its own merchant category and, in some cases, may not be categorized as expected. Approved categories vary by sponsor and can be viewed at my.paytient.com or in the Paytient app. The card can cover bills still owed to providers, as long as they are not being collected by a different party.
To confirm the ability to pay monthly minimums, the company compares income and expenses during the application, without affecting credit score. Paytient states it has SOC 2 audit and offers informational resources such as guides, webinars, interviews, and podcasts, as well as a client operations portal and member access.
