The Teacher Preparation Affordability Scholarship helps students preparing to teach in New Mexico cover educational expenses. It is not an automatic award or limited to recent high-school graduates: licensed teachers pursuing graduate study related to their specialty may also qualify.
Applicants need New Mexico residency—or an applicable state nondiscrimination waiver—demonstrated financial need as determined by the institution, and enrollment in an approved teacher-preparation program at a public or Tribal college in the state. Those not yet licensed must pursue a route leading to Public Education Department licensure, including an education major or alternative certification program. Licensed teachers may pursue graduate education or a field related to their teaching specialty.
NMHED does not provide one central student application: applicants must request instructions from their chosen college’s teacher-preparation program and apply directly there. Aid may continue while satisfactory academic progress is maintained, for no more than five academic years. Ask which financial documents the institution accepts, which tuition and materials qualify, and how renewal works. Do not assume FAFSA is the application itself; the state page assigns review and awards to the campus.
