About PayPal

PayPal: digital payments and financial services for individuals and businesses

PayPal is a financial technology company that operates a digital payments platform and an electronic wallet. Its offering is organized into two main areas: solutions for individuals and solutions for businesses. The company presents itself as an option to pay, send, and save money, with an app that integrates payment management, rewards, and package tracking.

Payments in physical stores and online

For individual users, PayPal allows payments in physical stores and online. In stores, contactless payment is made with the PayPal Debit Card, which also accumulates rewards. Online, payment is completed with PayPal checkout. The company offers a rewards program with hundreds of offers from brands such as Adidas, Sony, Instacart, 1-800 Flowers.com, Origins, Nobull, and Ticketmaster. Users can earn a variable percentage back and an additional 5% on purchases within their monthly category when paying with the PayPal Debit Card, with rewards redeemable for cash or other options.

Buy now, pay later

PayPal offers two main deferred payment options. Pay in 4 allows you to split a purchase into four interest-free payments, payable every two weeks, with no late fees and no impact on your credit score when applying. It is available for purchases between $30 and $1,500, subject to approval and with restrictions for Missouri residents. Pay Monthly allows you to finance purchases in 3, 6, 12, or 24 payments, with no down payment and no sign-up or late fees, with a fixed interest rate that varies based on the amount and credit. There is also the Pay Monthly in store option, with a single-use card valid for 24 hours after loan approval. Pay Monthly is not available to residents of Alaska, Connecticut, Hawaii, or Washington.

Cards and credit

The company offers the PayPal Cashback Mastercard, which offers 3% cash back when you check out with PayPal and 1.5% on all other Mastercard purchases. It also offers the PayPal Credit Card, with special financing on purchases over $149 at establishments that accept PayPal or Mastercard. Both cards are subject to credit approval.

Sending, receiving, and managing money

PayPal allows you to send money to just about anyone, anywhere, in seconds. Users can request money, receive payments, and create pools for group gifts or other purposes. The app also allows you to add cards and banks, set up direct deposit, add cash, manage subscriptions, and set savings goals. The PayPal Savings account offers an annual percentage yield (APY) of 3.30% as of June 16, 2026, is free, is FDIC insured, and is held at Synchrony Bank. PayPal clarifies that it is a financial technology company, not a bank, and is not FDIC-insured.

Cryptocurrency

PayPal allows you to buy, sell, and transfer cryptocurrency from your account. The company warns that these assets are not deposits, are not eligible for FDIC insurance, and may lose value. Custody, trading, and transfer services are performed by Paxos Trust Company, N.A.

Business solutions

For businesses, PayPal offers online payment acceptance through checkout, installment payments, guest checkout, Venmo acceptance, point of sale (POS) system, invoicing, payment links, enterprise payments, and Tap to Pay. It also provides risk management tools, reporting, shipping, and agentic commerce. Financial services for businesses include working capital, business loans, and business debit card. The platform is suited for large enterprises, small businesses, solopreneurs, partners, and developers, with third-party integrations and a developer resource section.
