San Francisco Department of Disability and Aging Services — Benefits and Resources Hub
The DAS Hub is San Francisco’s municipal entry point for older adults, people with disabilities, veterans, and caregivers. It connects callers with meals, in-home care, case management, caregiver support, benefits, protection, and activities; each program sets its own assessment and service rules.
About San Francisco Department of Disability and Aging Services — Benefits and Resources Hub
San Francisco’s Department of Disability and Aging Services (DAS) is an entry point for people who need help sorting through several needs at once. The city groups referrals for meals and groceries, in-home support, case management, caregiver help, community activities, legal assistance, health coverage, and adult protection under one department. It is not a single office that automatically approves every benefit: each program keeps its own eligibility rules and capacity limits.
The DAS Hub number is (415) 355-6700; the city also lists (800) 814-0009 and TTY 711. The public-facing Hub is at 2 Gough Street. The administrative offices at 1650 Mission Street serve a different purpose and require an appointment for in-person visits; the official page directs walk-ins to the Hub. Both addresses appear above with route links so visitors can distinguish the service desk from the administrative office.
On the first call, describe what the older adult can no longer do independently: prepare meals, bathe, clean, travel to an appointment, or manage appointments. Ask the specialist to identify whether the next step is a meal application, an in-home support assessment, a referral to an Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC), or caregiver assistance. The line can guide and connect a caller, but the receiving program determines eligibility, assessment, and availability.
DAS works with community providers and maintains a local service directory. Resources include caregiver respite and training, case coordination, social and digital activities, Medicare and benefits counseling, and protective services. For paid personal assistance, the department describes In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) as help with daily living tasks, but families need to request an assessment and follow that program’s process; a general intake call does not guarantee that a worker will be assigned immediately.
Food support has several routes: community dining sites, grocery programs, and home-delivered meals through the local aging-services network. Someone who can leave home with support may benefit from a congregate site that combines a meal with social contact and information. If the person is homebound, ask staff to screen for delivery and explain the functional criteria. Locations are not interchangeable: before traveling, ask which site serves the home address, whether transportation is available, and whether advance enrollment is needed.
Have the ZIP code, age, mobility needs, relevant health conditions, insurance, preferred language, and caregiver information ready. Ask who conducts the assessment, what paperwork is accepted, whether an in-home visit is possible, how long a waitlist may be, and whether a copayment applies. The DAS Hub helps identify the right route; a medical crisis or immediate danger requires emergency services, not an administrative referral.
