About Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco
The Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco brings contemporary art into Chinatown’s everyday fabric and works with the voices of immigrant communities and other historically marginalised groups. The organisation develops exhibitions, festivals, public-art projects and guided visits that connect history with current creative work. Its 667 Grant Avenue space includes a design store and areas to explore; it should not be confused with the Mark Lai Learning Center at 750 Kearny Street, which receives visitors by appointment only.
Visitors often value the intimate scale of the exhibitions and the chance to encounter stories that can be missing from traditional museums. The centre runs C.H.A.T., Chinatown history and art tours that link artworks, streets and community memory; dates and places depend on each programme. The Grant Avenue space is open Thursday to Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., while temporary exhibitions and events may follow different schedules. Visitors to the shop also appreciate finding works and objects by independent artists from the area.
The Grant Avenue shop and space is at 667 Grant Ave; the offices and Mark Lai Learning Center are at 750 Kearny Street, on the third floor inside the Hilton. The official site asks visitors to make an appointment for the learning centre; tours can be booked through its programme page. From Portsmouth Square, the building is reached by crossing the Rolland and Kathryn Lowe pedestrian bridge during the posted access hours. It suits travellers who want to read the neighbourhood through contemporary art as well as its temples, shops and historic buildings.
Community arts organisation with exhibitions, cultural programmes and Chinatown history and art tours.
