About Historic Market Square

Historic Market Square, also known as El Mercado, is a three-block municipal complex in downtown San Antonio. The city says it brings together more than one hundred locally owned businesses across shops, restaurants, stalls, and public activity spaces. Its retail identity is strongly connected to Mexico: visitors will find clothing and accessories, crafts, leather goods, and cultural merchandise, as well as eateries that make the plaza a place to shop and eat.

Food offerings include Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants such as Mi Tierra and La Margarita, along with a food court and stalls serving snacks, desserts, and drinks. Individual businesses set their own menus and hours; an event listing does not guarantee every restaurant will be serving. Management publishes a shop directory and event calendar, with music, working artists, and celebrations that make some weekends more festive.

The plaza’s general hours are daily, 10 a.m.–6 p.m., although shops and restaurants may close on their own schedules. Public lots and garages are a short walk away, with separate fees; the city recommends arriving early for events. Google reviews tied to the complex highlight colorful walkways, handmade shopping, and food variety, and also mention crowds and parking. It is an easy stop to combine with the historic center; check the calendar and specific business before planning a meal.
