About Oregon National Guard State Tuition Assistance (ONGSTA)

ONGSTA provides undergraduate tuition support for current Oregon National Guard members enrolled at eligible in-state postsecondary institutions. It may cover up to 90 credits at community colleges and up to 180 quarter or 120 semester credits at eligible universities. The calculation depends on the school and other military aid; students must reapply every year.

Applicants must complete basic training, remain in good standing, attend unit assemblies and annual training, not already hold a bachelor’s degree, and maintain satisfactory progress, including a 2.0 GPA or equivalent federal standard. FAFSA and an ONGSTA application are required. For 2026–27, the page says other tuition-assistance benefits are applied first before this grant is calculated.

For 2026–27, the book allowance is $25 per quarter credit or $35 per semester credit, capped at $1,000 annually and available only for fall 2026, winter, and spring 2027. Fees are not covered that year. At eligible private Oregon institutions, the state benchmark is no more than $274 per credit before federal tuition assistance is subtracted.

Published deadlines include December 1, 2026, for winter/spring semester and March 1, 2027, for spring quarter. OSAC, the military branch, and the school each verify service, applicable credits, and academic progress. Check the term calendar and ask financial aid when funds will post to the student account.

Approval has three checks: OSAC reviews FAFSA and the application, the Guard verifies service and military benefits, and the school validates applicable credits and progress. Guard status alone does not complete the process. Keep filings and messages, update school changes, and ask the certifying official when funds will post.

To compare this benefit with other options, ask financial aid for an estimate separating tuition, fees, housing, and excluded expenses. Confirm whether it renews annually, what GPA or course load it requires, and whom to contact if the student account does not show the payment. Keep award letters and receipts until the school confirms disbursement.
