California Middle Class Scholarship

The Middle Class Scholarship (MCS) supports certain undergraduates attending the University of California, California State University, or an eligible bachelor’s program at a community college. Awards are calculated using FAFSA or the California Dream Act Application, other resources, and cost of attendance. There is no fixed check that can be predicted from family income alone: CSAC determines eligibility and campuses update aid packages.

About California Middle Class Scholarship

The Middle Class Scholarship (MCS) supports certain undergraduates attending the University of California, California State University, or an eligible bachelor’s program at a community college. Awards are calculated using FAFSA or the California Dream Act Application, other resources, and cost of attendance. There is no fixed check that can be predicted from family income alone: CSAC determines eligibility and campuses update aid packages.

To be considered, complete FAFSA or CADAA for the correct cycle, list the campus, and meet applicable residency, enrollment, and academic-progress rules. Recent legislation expanded some criteria, which may differ from older brochures or calculators. CSAC’s operations-memo page contains 2026–27 notices, including award criteria and file-layout updates; check the correct year before interpreting an award.

The amount is calculated against eligible cost of attendance after other recognized aid and resources are counted, under state criteria processed by CSAC. An estimated award can change during fall if the campus verifies different data, enrollment changes, or new information arrives. What appears at the start of term may not be the final determination. Do not use a historical percentage or budget announcement as an individual calculation.

On October 6, 2026, UC Berkeley reported that some awards for full-time and 9-to-11-unit students had been reduced in error and that the campus was correcting aid packages. That notice is specific to Berkeley and does not show that other campuses had the same issue. Recheck the institutional portal after the stated correction date and contact the office if the bill still looks wrong.

MCS does not replace other aid: Pell, Cal Grant, private scholarships, and outside resources can affect the calculation. If an award decreases, ask which inputs changed and check FAFSA/CADAA records, income data, and units. The campus office can confirm whether the offer is estimated or final and what CSAC determination must arrive before disbursement.

A practical strategy is to file the state or federal aid application as soon as it opens and track California priority dates, which may come before the final FAFSA deadline. Keep confirmations and monitor CSAC and campus messages during the year. Students under AB 540 or unable to use FAFSA should check CADAA and official Dream Act resources; never pay an intermediary to submit free applications.

Ask the financial-aid office for a written term-by-term estimate separating tuition, fees, housing, books, and other costs. Keep the award letter, records, and any service agreement. If your studies, residence, or course load change, contact the administrator before that decision affects your aid.
