About Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG)

The Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG) is a state grant not based on financial need for residents attending a participating private institution in Virginia full time. It is not available at every college or for online study outside program rules: the school must be approved and the student must pursue an eligible program. The institution administers applications and communicates the final amount; SCHEV notes that awards may be adjusted after enrollment and funding are verified.

For 2026–27, fall application dates were September 15 and October 1; both have passed. A spring-only window remains: eligible students who did not receive VTAG in the previous fiscal year must submit by December 1, 2026. New and readmitted students may qualify for the spring category under the published rules, but funding depends on remaining funds and should not be assumed.

The grant is handled through the chosen school’s financial-aid office, which verifies domicile and status, degree program, and full-time enrollment. Some eligibility paths require Virginia domicile, while others rely on Virginia schooling and tax-residency criteria under state law. Ask the college whether it still accepts spring applications, which residency documents it requires, and how it will calculate an award; filing does not replace admission or FAFSA for other aid.
