About Align Technology
Align Technology: digital orthodontics and intraoral scanners
Align Technology is a global medical device company focused on orthodontics and restorative dentistry. Its approach combines digital treatment planning, shape engineering based on biomechanical principles, mass customization, and 3D printing. The company presents itself as responsible for introducing the Invisalign clear aligner system and for transforming the way orthodontic and restorative treatments are planned and delivered.
The Invisalign System
The Invisalign System is the company's clear aligner solution. According to corporate data, it has been used by more than 23 million people worldwide, including more than 7 million teens and children. The company describes it as the world's most advanced clear aligner system and notes that it can treat a wide range of cases, from simple dental alignment to complex corrections, in both young people and adults. The base of more than 23 million cases and continuous innovations in aligner materials, software algorithms, and 3D force systems underpin its evolution.
iTero intraoral scanners
In 2011, Align Technology acquired the iTero intraoral scanner, a natural extension of its digital processes. These scanners help improve the patient experience and elevate clinical precision. To date, more than 16 million restoration cases have been enabled with the iTero scanner. The company continues to invest in digital restorative workflows, which include chairside visualization, prosthetic CAD capabilities, in-office milling options, and laboratory workflows. In addition, iTero scanners are the only ones that offer tools and applications designed exclusively for Invisalign treatment.
History and evolution
Align Technology was founded in March 1997 by five employees in a small duplex in Redwood City, California, with the idea of leveraging technology to straighten teeth. In September 1998 it received FDA clearance to market the Invisalign System, and in July 1999 the first commercial sales were made to orthodontists in North America. In September 2000 it launched its first national advertising campaign in the United States. In January 2001 it went public on NASDAQ under the symbol ALGN. In August 2001 it launched Invisalign in Germany, with headquarters in Frankfurt, to serve the markets of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. In April 2002 it extended the system to general dentists. In May 2003, Invisalign was integrated into the orthodontic curriculum at New York University College of Dentistry (NYUCD). In August 2005 it introduced Invisalign Express 10, a lower-cost option for simple cases. In January 2007 it established a distributor for Asia-Pacific. In November 2007 it introduced Vivera retainers. In July 2008 it launched Invisalign Teen, and in October 2008 Invisalign Assist, designed for general dentists. The company has continued to evolve over 29 years, and today doctors in more than 100 markets use the Invisalign System and iTero scanners.
Key metrics and global presence
The company reports annualized net revenues of more than $4.1 billion, approximately 23.5 million Invisalign patients, 2,358 active patents, and more than 20,000 employees worldwide.
