Doug Fir Lounge

Doug Fir Lounge, live music venue in Portland

Doug Fir Lounge is a concert venue in Portland, Oregon, dedicated to live music. Its offering is built around high-end sound and lighting equipment and an intimate-sized room designed so that audiences can see and hear clearly from any point, according to the venue's own presentation.

History and origins

The venue opened in 2004 and, according to its account, raised the bar for live music in Portland. The venue describes treating musicians the way much bigger clubs do, with a fully stocked green room and a level of production and hospitality that, in its view, was not common in similar spaces. The design for the 2004 opening was by internationally renowned architect Jeff Kovel.

The company notes that Doug Fir was the first cornerstone of what is now the thriving East Burnside neighborhood. Its interior, described as an urban ski lodge with a vibe somewhere between Twin Peaks and The Jetsons, combines exterior walls clad in logs with an interior of textured woodwork and glass.

Change of location

After 19 years at its East Burnside location, the original venue closed in September 2023. The venue plans to open in 2027 at its new location, 301 SE Morrison Street, the former home of the late-night spot Le Bistro Montage. The move has required a lengthy period of planning, construction and permitting.

Programming and artist booking

The venue does not limit itself to a specific genre when programming, though it cautions that it may not be the best fit for every band. In its booking policy it explicitly rejects openly racist, sexist, homophobic or transphobic acts. To propose performances, it asks for an electronic press kit, links to the artist's social media profiles and any material they wish to share; for tours or album releases, it asks that the desired time frame be included.
