About OSF HealthCare

OSF HealthCare: an integrated health system in Illinois and Michigan

OSF HealthCare is an integrated health system founded by The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis and headquartered in downtown Peoria, Illinois. The organization presents itself as a health care partner that combines advanced treatments with compassionate care, and its stated mission is to serve persons with the greatest care and love in a community that celebrates the Gift of Life, in the spirit of Christ and the example of Francis of Assisi.

The system employs almost 27,000 people, known as Mission Partners, and operates in 174 locations with 18 inpatient facilities, including 16 hospitals and 2,141 licensed beds. Its network includes 158 OSF Medical Group primary care and specialty care clinics, 39 urgent care locations, and two colleges of nursing throughout Illinois and Michigan.

Hospital structure and care network

The hospital network spans several cities in Illinois and Michigan. The largest hospital is OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, in Peoria, a tertiary care teaching center offering numerous specialized services and medical residency programs. Its campus is home to OSF Children's Hospital of Illinois, the third largest pediatric hospital in the state and the only full-service tertiary children's hospital in the southern part of the state, with 136 beds and more than 141 pediatric subspecialists. According to the organization's information, it treats more children in Illinois than any other hospital outside Chicago.

The hospital network includes centers in Alton, Bloomington, Danville, Dixon, Evergreen Park, Galesburg, Kewanee, Mendota, Monmouth, Ottawa, and Peru, in Illinois, as well as in Escanaba, Michigan. OSF Divine Mercy Continuing Care Hospital, in Peoria, is also part of the system.

Specialized institutes and areas of care

OSF HealthCare provides care for highly complex cases through three specialized institutes: the OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute, the OSF HealthCare Cardiovascular Institute, and the OSF HealthCare Illinois Neurological Institute. The service portfolio includes behavioral and mental health, brain and spine, breast health, cancer care, diabetes and endocrinology, emergency services, fertility care, gynecology, heart and vascular, home health, hospice, lung and pulmonology, occupational health, orthopedics, pediatrics, pregnancy and birth, primary care, rehabilitation, sleep, surgery, transplant services, urgent care, and women's health.

Home care and digital health

Through OSF Home Care Services, the system manages an extensive network that includes eight home health agencies, hospice agencies with their own inpatient facility, a home infusion pharmacy, and home medical equipment.

OSF OnCall, established in 2020 as its digital health operating entity, offers a hospital-at-home program and virtual care services, adapting care delivery to patient preferences. The My OSF mobile app allows users to schedule appointments, access OSF MyChart, and get step-by-step directions.

Innovation, education, and research

OSF Innovation was created to address the major challenges facing the health care sector. Within it, Jump Simulation is a leader in health care education, simulation, and innovation, the result of collaboration between OSF HealthCare and the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria. Its home is the Jump Trading Simulation & Education Center, presented as one of the largest simulation and innovation centers in the world. The organization has also been recognized by Fortune as one of the most innovative companies in the country.

Among the advances the system highlights are digital health solutions, cancer treatments such as proton therapy and brachytherapy, developments from the OSF Breakthrough Treatment Center, and projects such as virtual reality heart models for surgeons and a pediatric cardiac procedure presented as a world first.

Affiliated entities and philanthropic activity

OSF HealthCare owns Pointcore, Inc., which groups health-related businesses; OSF HealthCare Foundation, its philanthropic arm; and OSF Ventures, which provides investment capital to promising health care innovation startups. The organization also maintains OSF Innovation, OSF Libraries, and OSF OnCall Digital Health as affiliated sites.
