About Saenger Theatre Pensacola
Saenger Theatre Pensacola: a century of performing arts on Palafox
Saenger Theatre Pensacola is a performing arts venue located in the heart of downtown Pensacola, on Palafox Street. Opened on April 2, 1925, the theater has more than a hundred years of activity and has established itself as a landmark for the city's cultural life. Its programming includes a wide variety of shows, concerts, and events.
History and evolution of the venue
The building was constructed in 1925 to host vaudeville and silent movies. It was located near the railroad tracks and was part of a chain of Southeastern Theatres that were very popular with performers who were traveling by train. In 1940, with the introduction of Cinemascope, movie screenings became a staple of entertainment in Pensacola. During World War II, the Saenger showed newsreels 24 hours a day, in addition to its regular movie schedule, a service especially important for military personnel serving at nearby NAS.
In 1975, as downtown areas were being largely abandoned in favor of suburban malls, the building closed in deplorable condition. The following year, ABC Southeastern Theatres donated the property to the City of Pensacola. A lack of government funds led to a determination that it should be demolished and turned into a parking lot. A group of citizens that would eventually become Friends of the Saenger (FOS) rallied citizens, businesses, the City of Pensacola, and the University of West Florida to restore the theater as a performing arts center for Northwest Florida. The Grand Reopening took place in 1981, with a concert by the Duke Ellington Orchestra. The newly renovated theater provided a home that served as a base for the development of Pensacola's now vibrant arts community. In 1995, FOS spearheaded an expansion.
Show programming
The Saenger Theatre Pensacola's lineup spans concerts, Broadway shows, and various events. Among the dates announced at the time of the analysis were the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra's season opening, under the direction of Peter Rubardt in his 30th season, with a program including Antonín Dvořák's Carnival Overture; the group Roman Street with Andy Vargas; the Bread tribute titled Toast: The Best of Bread; and Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox's The Future is Vintage World Tour. The venue also hosts the Broadway in Pensacola series.
Tickets and box office
Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster, by phone by calling the theater's box office during normal business hours, or in person at the box office itself. The box office also handles the purchase of specific seats for people who need to transfer from a wheelchair.
Accessibility
The theater has accessible seating in multiple locations on the Orchestra and Balcony levels. On the Orchestra level, Rows V, BB, and DD are reserved for this use. In the Balcony, accessible seating is located adjacent to the Grand Tier in the Loge seating. There is also seating on the Orchestra level that allows patrons to transfer out of their wheelchair by lifting the arm. There are also areas reserved for persons with sight and hearing impairments. For those who need sign language interpretation, the box office handles the necessary arrangements.
The Saenger Theatre does not have a parking lot adjacent to the venue. We recommend using the Jefferson Street Parking Garage or the Intendencia Street Parking Garage. There are two passenger drop-off points: one heading north on Palafox from Intendencia, with a parking space in front of the theater, and another heading west on Intendencia from Jefferson, at the foot of the wheelchair ramp.
Cancellation policy and venue access
If an event is canceled, refunds will be made at the original point of purchase. Tickets purchased through Ticketmaster are refunded automatically. Tickets purchased at a Ticketmaster outlet or at the theater's box office must be returned and the original credit card presented. If an event is rescheduled, tickets are valid for the new date. The lobby opens one hour before the start of the show and, typically, the auditorium opens thirty minutes before.
Space rental and VIP experiences
The theater offers flexible spaces for meetings, professional catering service, and dedicated event support for groups of any size. Information on layouts, capacities, and bookings is available through the website. In addition, the Green Room Lounge offers a private bar with premium spirits, complimentary popcorn, and comfortable seating before the show.
Supporting the theater and employment
The Saenger Theatre has undertaken numerous restoration projects throughout its history to maintain its beauty and function. Contributions to the theater include special perks for donors. The organization also posts job openings and keeps open the possibility of subscribing to a newsletter with news and upcoming shows.
