About Washington State Opportunity Scholarship — Career and Technical
WSOS’s Career and Technical Scholarship (CTS) supports Washington students pursuing certificates, apprenticeships, associate degrees, or other technical training in trades, STEM, or health care. The scholarship can provide up to $1,500 per quarter depending on the track and includes career-development activities. It is not universal free tuition: applicants need an eligible program at a participating institution, and support can vary by quarter and financial need.
The eligible major and campus list is the first check before enrolling. Tracks include technical and health fields linked to in-demand jobs; some pathways add rural or work-based components. Requirements can include Washington residency, financial need, a minimum course load, and satisfactory progress. Each cohort sets its own application window, so applicants should not infer a current deadline from an older announcement.
CTS can reduce the amount a student needs to borrow while providing career resources, but it does not automatically cover transportation, tools, or every program fee. Ask the college for a cost sheet separating tuition, books, materials, and certifications; ask WSOS which expenses its award accepts and how quarterly renewal works. Students with foster-care or unaccompanied-homelessness histories can also review Passport to Careers, a separate program that may complement their plan.
